Classroom Activities
Here are some day-to-day classroom activities that can be used to better assist speech language students at home and at school:
1. Auditory memory and recall games like "Whisper Down the Lane" and "She sells sea shells..."
- Builds attending and listening skills
2. Choose reading material with the same level of students language experience, familiar vocabulary, and sentence structure/patterns
- Maximizes comprehension and verbalizations
3. Use rhyming songs and poems
- Helps students learn phonetic sounds
4. Utilize language programs that involve listening, speaking, reading and writing.
5. Use sensory modes of teaching including visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile.
6. Pause, Prompt, Praise
- Allows time to think, gain assistance, and praise for their work.
7. Emphasize-turn taking
- Teaches the fundamental elements of communication
8. 20 Questions
- Encourages the student to identify words with yes/no questions
9. Word association games:
- Builds fluency, accuracy and speed of word retrieval
10. Encourage paraphrasing
- Requires student to contain sentence meaning and utilize other sentence structures. Help students learn adaptation
